Regional Supply Chains

It applies three rounds of a Delphi exercise to identify, select and prioritise the critical indices of supply chain uncertainty perceived by panel experts. The thematic analysis also provides theorisations on the process for uncertainty perception and factors shaping perception. In this position you will perform Supply Planning processes, in accordance with defined standard operating procedures and maintain an overview of overall Supply Planning team activities.

This includes developing, implementing and maintaining globally standardized and harmonized supply chain strategies and processes for functions such as logistics, warehousing, and materials management. Responsibilities include building a robust global supply chain organization, leading change and driving continuous improvement, while aligning with the regional business strategy and the global supply chain strategy. In order to accomplish, it is essential for the jobholder to work closely with regional management and the global supply chain leaders to balance both regional and global requirements. To account for the fact that product differentiation tends to lower the degree of potential competition, we also calculate a similarity-adjusted real effective exchange rate (Appendix 3.1 for details). The implication is that countries whose exports are more similar should be given greater weights when effective exchange rate measures are used to assess the impact of bilateral exchange rate movements on competitiveness.

Although New Delhi had withdrawn from the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, regional countries could contribute towards establishing a business-friendly environment in India that would help it to attract foreign direct investment. As a key country in realising the Free and Open Indo-Pacific, it would be important for India to remain engaged with the region and its activities. By contrast, changes in Japan’s integrated effective exchange rate have been more closely tracked by movements in the real effective exchange rate, and in particular, its appreciation since 2007. This is explained by the relatively high local content of Japanese exports and because the currency of the most important supplier, China, also generally appreciated. Asian economies increasingly have formed a supply network, with China taking the role of an assembly hub for final goods exports, notably consumer goods. In this “triangular trading pattern” (Gaulier, Lemoine, and Ünal-Kensenci, 2005), direct export competition has been accompanied by trade partnerships.

The research found an accumulative–aggregative duality that explains uncertainty perception and a cost–conformance–connection triadic set of factors underlying the perceived critical indices. The perks of a regional role for some, is the opportunity to travel around the world. Even if the opportunity is minimal, chances are you will need to hold conference calls with team members from other countries. It does, however, provide a model that says it makes sense to have suppliers close to the manufacturing plants in the countries in which those goods are sold. As a senior member of the Africa/Asia Regional Team, the Regional Supply Chain and Operations Manager acts as an advisor to the region on all Supply Chain and Operations matters (procurement, stock/inventory management, fleet, facilities and assets management). As with the conventional REER, trading partner weights are applied to a given country’s own exchange rate movements, which matter for the share of domestic value added in that country’s exports.

However, there are many differences between a regional supply chain management role and a local role. Prof Urata observed that the COVID-19 pandemic had resulted in supply and demand shocks around the world. International trade had declined and some Asian economies were expected to experience negative growth in 2020. In response to these disruptions, firms and governments across the globe have been implementing measures to diversify their supply chains, promote domestic production, and introduce labour-saving technologies. Panellists agreed with the importance of diversification, highlighting that both governments and businesses should act promptly to prepare themselves for the new economic conditions in a post-pandemic world. The new regional supply chain is an attempt to tamp down on those skyrocketing prices as demand is unlikely to let up anytime soon, with some public health experts forecasting a return of the coronavirus in the fall.
